Introduction

Introduction With the success of science and technology, the world is introduced to lots of new things which are for the use of the people and are designed in a way to provide comfort to them. The Internet of Things is also of those technologies which have changed the daily life of people and their surroundings. IoT stands for Internet of Things, which describes the network of physical objects called "things". These things are embedded with software, sensors and other technologies that help to connect and exchange data with other devices through the internet. Although IoT is a relatively new concept to most, the inter connective technology has been around for two decades.

Importance of learning the Internet of Things

One of the main reasons you should learn about the Internet of Things is the massive increase in the use of technology in the everyday life of people. Thus, making IoT-based technologies and devices necessary to use and with their benefits and resources, it provides a lot of opportunities. It has ultimately led to the requirement for skilled IoT data professionals and put the experienced professionals of the area in high demand. Pursuing a career in IoT is a good option and has great scope in IT. IoT offers a nice amount of jobs in part because IoT is not based on an industry or a specific technology but is a collection of all. It is also a perfect choice for a Data scientist.

Uses of the Internet of Things

The real-world uses of the Internet of Things are that Smart cities often install IoT sensor software into the city's infrastructure, such as street lights and traffic signals. The sensor system using mobile phones can collect and share data from our vehicles via applications like Google Maps, thus helping in traffic management. It can be used for the development of everyday objects like kitchen appliances, cars and other home appliances. With the internet via embedded devices, seamless communication is possible between people, processes, and things. The safety and security of the people are also of significant use to IoT. IoT helped in improving the management of the staff and reducing human labour. The resources provide better assistance. Operations are efficient and cost-effective. It also benefits by providing better business opportunities through marketing and development. IoT has also secured work safety and helps in public security. It helps in marking the image of the company as more trustworthy.

Technologies used in the Internet of Things

Some of the technologies used in IoT are standard protocols and networking technologies, such as:

  • RFID: Radio Frequency Identification(RFID) is to identify and capture the data stored in the object.
  • NFC: Near-field communication is a wireless device used to communicate over a range of 5cm for security. It is primarily used in mobile applications.
  • Wifi-direct: This device can connect two wireless devices in the same space.
  • LTE-A: Long Term Evolution Advanced(LTE-A) device used for mobile communication.
Some other devices are low-energy Bluetooth, radio protocols and wireless appliances.

Components of an IoT system and their working

IoT systems are represented by integrating four distinct components:

  • Sensors/devices: Sensors with the meaning of the name itself sense the data and collect it from its surrounding. In other words, it is a device that detects and collects data from the physical environment. The best example of a sensor can be our mobile applications like cameras and GPS. For instance, with the help of GPS, we can track our location from our surroundings and store it.
  • Connectivity: Now that the location is on the cloud, it still needs to get a way to store it there, and for that, we can connect using methods like satellite, wi-fi, Bluetooth or through the internet or router. Choosing which connectivity option is best comes down to the specific IoT application, but they all accomplish the same task: getting data to the cloud.
  • Data Processing: After the data is on the cloud, the software starts processing data to check it and process the output for the data for the user.
  • User interface: Once the software provides the output, the user has to use the output as the information by the system. Depending on the IoT application, the user may also be able to perform an action and affect the system.

The role of AI in IoT

Artificial Intelligence(AI) plays a vital role in IoT in IT. "If IoT is the body, then AI is the brain which together is called a match made in Tech Heaven!!Some of the applications where both are required:

Collaborative Robots: Collaborative Robots or Cobots are highly complex machines designed to help humans in a shared workspace with environments ranging from office to industrial.

Drones: Drones are like aircraft, but with a software pilot, not a human one, and help get a view or navigation of the surrounding.

Smart Cities: For this, sensor devices attached to the physical infrastructure of the city can be used to monitor the city.

Smart Retailing: AI and IoT can be used by retailers to understand customer behavior, making shopping intelligent and effortless.

A few real-life examples are Tesla Motors – Self Driving Cars, WildTrack – Endangered Species Preservation, Automated vacuum cleaner – iRobot Roomba.

Conclusion

The future with AI and IoT is considered a bright one. With multiple advances in artificial intelligence, light-speed communications, and analytics, IoT is even more convenient, and high-performance IoT devices are taking over almost every technology domain.
